I was fascinated by the time period of this book, I was born in 1963, which is when the book takes place, and new America is emerging. This book is an immediate classic. Touching on so many aspects in the 1960s such as civil unrest of the period, women's lib, civil rights, terminal illness, and it does it with dignigity, grace and humor. The main characters are all women from different ages, social, ethnic and econmonic background. The book examines the relationship of wealthy white women in the south and their black maids that clean, cook and care for their children. The Help also takes a look at a daughter's relationship with her ill mother and her socialite friends as she tries to understand her world after leaving her home and going to college and the changes she has made from young girl to woman. This is a must read for everyone. You will laugh, cry and get angry sometimes all in the same chapter. Truly one of the best books I have read in years.
