Title: A Wife Wanted
File Attachment:
Attachment Type:

The following advertisement was run in the Williamsport Republican in 1854, for four issues, and had its desired results:

"A WIFE WANTED.-The advertiser wishing to obtain a wife and in order to do so without going through the usual formality of a courtship, takes this method of informing all interested of his wishes. His age is twenty-one years and he is of a good moral character, temperate in his habits, of mild (but will not submit to be caudled) disposition and has been informed by many that he is handsome and manly in his appearance and behavior; has a good occupation by which he can support a wife with all necessary comforts and conveniences, and has a good English education.

"Any lady (widows without 'responsibilities' not excepted) between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five years, who understands the ordinary routine of housework; possessing a reasonable degree of beauty and form of figure, with good mental accomplishments and of a mild and agreeable temper, who has a desire to enter into the martimonial state, can have further information given her by addressing post-paid (to avoid confusion) 'Young Bachelor,' Williamsport, Indiana.

"All communications must be kept strictly private and confidential."
