Title: To the Public

Attachment Type:

In justice to myself, and for the satisfaction of my friends, I am induced to offer the following in reply to certain rumors, started by certain parties known to the public, who have no higher ambition than to build themselves up by tearing others down.

He that would acquit himself honorably before the public, must always be ready to define his position on all subjects of interest that may be brought to his notice, whether of private character, or of public enterprise; though to do so were to bring down upon his head that anathemas of opposing factions.- However much, I may doubt the propriety, or necessity of such demands on one whose humble position in life would give so little weight on any subject of public interest, I do not shrink from the task.

Shall we have a new Court House? and how? and when? and where?

Many things are desirable that are not practicable. It is easier to levy taxes that it is to pay them. Light crops and continual demands have drained many portions of the county of all suplus, and many farmers must now buy grain with which to meet the requirements and necessities of life. However desirable it might be, to have the vexing questino of locality permanently settled, I believe that my brother farmers on whom the burden of taxation must always fall will bear me out in the declaration, that the time is not yet. Let us meet our present obligations, and then when abundant harvest's reward the laborer and husbandman, we may look to our convenience and public improvement. Locality, is to my mind, a question that belongs to the future. Who can tell what time will bring forth, or circumstances demand. I allow no one to take a deeper interest in the welfare of Warren County than I do, and am always ready to take my place and defend the right, whenever such questions are properly brought before the public. I claim the right accorded to all matters wherein I am interested. Suffice it to say, that I am not pledged to any locality, or identified with any, except the interests and welfare of Warren County.
