Title: Local Option Election Nov. 27
File Attachment:
Attachment Type:

In responses to a petition of the legal voters of Washington and Kent townships in Warren county the commissioners of that county have called an election in the above townships for Monday, Nov. 27, to determine whether or not the sale of intoxicating liquors shall be licensed in these townships. There are now nine applications for liquor licenses being published in Warren county, seven by persons asking for a license to sell in Williamsport, one in West Lebanon and one in State Line. Williamsport is in Washington township and West Lebanon and State Line in Kent township. Willaim Collins, Frank Downs, Edward Madarea, Thomas Farrell, Fred T. Corbin, Elmer Blue and Grant Myers are the persons who are asking for permission to sell liquor in Williamsport; Charles Owens is asking for a license to for State Line; and John Sexton for West Lebanon.

The law provides that each unit (the township being the unit in these cases) is entitled to one saloon for each 500 inhabitants in the unit. The law also prescribes the method of determining the population, which is to multiply the vote cast for secretery of state at the last preceding election by 5. By this method Washington township will be entitled to four saloons, provided the township votes wet, and Kent township will be entitled to two. Even though Washington township goes wet three of the applicants for licenses in Williamsport will be disappointed.
