Title: A Very Short Sermon

TEXT.-Parable of the rich man and Lazarus.

Taking this narrative as a piece of true history, it plays hob with the orthodox creeds of of the present day. You will observe that it is nowhere even intimated that the rich man was a bad man, or that Lazarus was a good man. The text is silent as the grave about their moral characters. All that can possibly be proven by it, upon the ground of it being a piece of true history, is that the Rich Man was sent to Hell because he was rich, and Lazarus was sent to Abraham's bosom because he was poor. Now we challenge the tallest heads in christendom to prove any thing else from this text, which is so generally quoted to prove endless damnation. But how do our aristocratic weathy christians like the conclusions?
