Title: Taxation for Railroad
File Attachment:
Attachment Type:

On the 6th of next month, people of Warren county will determine by their ballots whether they will assist in the building of the Northern Indiana Railroad, which is to run through the northern part of the country, or not. Aready have been the people of Warren county felt the burden of taxation for different purposes of government, and undoubtedly they desire at least a temporary cessation of the onerous burden.- We believe the voters of the county will vote against the tax- they ought to do it, for,- although the proposed road will, if built, conduce to the interests of the country, yet the stockholders, or company, should not be allowed to exact by law or otherwise, the hard earned means of the pioneers of this country for the purpose of enriching themselves, and creating aristocratic railroad autocrats, and soulless fops who will feast upon the wealth of the public like pestiferous leeches. Yet there may be those living in the vicinity of the route who desire the road and who are willing to be taxed to build it, still there are many others who live so remote as to feel indifferent about it, and who do not feel able to pay anything towards it-- such persons, we contend, should not be compelled to pay a tax for railroads, simply because a majority may favor the tax. Let the people regard their own interests.
