Title: Plank Walks
File Attachment:
Attachment Type:

We are glad to hear that all interested intend to construct immediately, side walks ordered by the town authorities. It is surprising to hear that our town has remained so long in its primary state, as to improvements of streets and side walks. This can be accounted for only in the fact that but few are willing to subject themselves to the expense, but voluntarily making such improvements. It is we think, want of proper amount of enterprise in that direction; for surely our citizens are generous and public spirited it many ways and instances that could be cited, more expensive. The cost is small compared with the vast convenience and pleasure, the afford, using them during the muddy season. ONce made, no more opposition will be heard, for experience has proved that anything affording great benefits and luxury , will not be dispensed with by the recipients. There are many reasons why the walks should all be made in good order at once, and we hope to live in Williamsport long enough, to see all principal streets and walks improved.- Walks our school houses are indespensable for the great numbers of children who attend our schools. During such winters as last, mud and wet feel, physicians bills and cough medicines, prevailed largely.

To attend church it was almost an impossibility, and this may account to some extent for the large amount of immorality in this vicinity; it is therefore a durty of christians and philanthropists, who desire to propagate and encourage a noble work, to give influence to this enterprise.

We say then, push forward the good work already begun, and let the celebration of it's completion be at no longer or distant day, for no town in our knowledge having the population of this, is so destitute of good side walks. In this connection it is not improper to suggest to the town authorities, that for them to manifest some promptness in the construction of crossings, &c., would greatly encourage many others to promptness and duty. Up and doing "City Fathers," let us have your example so needful just now in this enterprise, ordered and confirmed by you official acts.
