On Wed., April 2, 1919 Illinois Central Engineer Maurice Purtill suddenly jumped up from a lunch counter in West Lebanon and climbed aboard the engine of a passenger train and headed west. About four miles out of town his train met an east bound freight and they collided. The freight crew jumped to safety but engineer Purtill was badly scalded and later died from his injuries.
