Title: Important to County Officers
File Attachment:
Attachment Type:

A bill has been introduced in the House of Representrtives to cut down the fees of county officers to such an extent as will render these offices almost worthless if the bill is passed. It certainly would be commendable in any legislature to lop off all superfluous or exhorbitant expenditures of the people's money, but at the same time it is niggardly and highly impolitic to place the fees of officers so low that men of ability cannot be got to fill them. We very much doubt whether the present fees of county officers are more than an inducement to men of competent ability to fill them with credit to themselves and honor to their constituents. At any rate, if the bill referred to be passed, none of our county offices will be worth a fig.
