The Sterling Remedy Co. The Establishment That Has Made Attica Famous Submitted by Victor Holm- Attica, IN Unquestionably the greatest proposition in a commercial sense that Attica maintains, or, to speak literally, helps to maintain and accelerate the growth of business which has grown from a comparatively insignificant beginning in 1894 to point where the annual receipts run well into six figures in 1900. The importance of this enterprise to the city will be readily realized when the fact is taken into consideration that it furnishes employment practically all the year round to upward of two hundred people, and all the money paid for salaries is brought in here from outside sources; it is all new money-new blood, so to speak, that is constantly being injected into the commercial arteries of the city,, stimulating and feeding every other business- the store, hotels and boarding houses, builders, contractors, artisans of all kinds, and radiates throughout the surrounding country to the farmers who bring their produce to town, even to the humble truck gardener. In addition to the direct benefits conferred by the distribution of this money, the company has also been the means of bringing many new people here, thereby increasing the population in a substantial manner. The creative and forceful genius who has produced these results is Major H. L. Kramer, General Manager of the Sterling Remedy Co., and the Indiana Springs Co., proprietors of Mudlavia, the great health resort near Attica, a description of which is given elsewhere in this publication. He is, to paraphrase an oft-quoted expression, “the man that made Attica famous”. There are nine cities in as many different states in this country bearing the classic name of Attica; but who besides the inhabitants thereof or their immediate neighbors ever heard of any of them except Attica, Indiana, which was practically in the same class until the advent of Kramer and Cascarets? Kramer’s Advertising Theories He Reasons from Cause to Effect, and Tells Many Practical Truths. In an interview on his methods, accorded to a representative of this paper, Mr. Kramer said: “ I attribute the success of our business, first, to the merit of our goods, and second, to the fact that we do not hesitate to make that merit known to the American public. Merit must be at the bottom of every advertised article. It makes no difference what it is; a box of Cascarets or a locomotive. This, of course, presupposes good goods, for which there exists a steady demand. The very fact that No-To-Bac and Cascarets exist and live in the minds of the people is proof positive that they are meritorious and do what they are advertised to do. “The fellow who starts in with an appropriation with the idea that he is doing a mercantile business, buying so much advertising and getting his money back directly from the dear public, with a 20-per-cent-profit coupon hitched to the returns, is the one who will throw his inherited patrimony to the four winds.” Spends $250,000,000 in Six Months “The Sterling Remedy Company spent $400,000 in advertising last year. Through advertising we have brought our business form practically nothing in 1896 to what it is today (1901). We did this by realizing that whatever we saved in money on advertising we had to make up in time; and, as we couldn’t spare the time, our expenditures consequently have been very large. This year I have spent $250,000 in newspaper alone before July 1. The amount will be increased from time to time until it reaches one million dollars annually. This will probably be year after next.” Following a recent convention of the Proprietary association at St. Louis Mr. Kramer published a pamphlet under the heading: “Talk’s Cheap. Results-That’s It”. The expression is characteristic. Mr. Kramer’s business endeavor has been pregnant with results-the kind of results that have paid dividends and have made the remedies manufactured by the Sterling company known the country over. Kramer-his friends never think of using the formal prefix mister-is a born advertiser. He believes in advertising as the Mohammedan believes in his Koran. It is the alpha and the omega of his business career. Advertising, to Mr. Kramer, means any agent the use of which will tend to increase the public knowledge of what he has to sell. As manager of the Sterling Remedy Company, Mr. Kramer has called to his aid the publicity attained through the use of billboards, announcements in street cards, pamphlets exploiting the merits of his wares and display cards for window use, together with magazine and newspaper advertising. All this has accomplished results. The company was organized late in 1894. Its sales at that time were practically nil. Last year, 6,000,000 boxes of Cascarets were sold to the trade, and every indication so far this year points to a larger increase than any previous year in the history of the business. Has An Interesting History The Sterling Remedy Company was incorporated September 1, 1896. D.M. Lord and A.L. Thomas, of the firm of Lord et Thomas, are president and vice president, respectively. Branch offices are maintained in Chicago, New York, Montreal, Can., and London, Eng. Again, the nature of the business is such that it requires exceedingly extensive use of the mail service. So largely is Uncle Sam’s Postoffice Department patronized by the company that Attica’s postoffice is rated second class, and the residents within the entire city limits have the benefits of free deliveries and collections of the mails, a privilege enjoyed by no other city of anywhere near the same size, comparing in this respect with cities like Indianapolis, or even Chicago and New York. The first things a stranger with-in our gates marvels at are the regulation mail wagons drawn up at the railroad station to receive the incoming and deliver the outgoing mail; the uniformed carriers hurrying hither and thither in its distribution and collection, and the steel letter boxes at frequent intervals all over the city at convenient places, mute but evident testimonials of our activity and progress and the immense business of the Sterling Remedy Co., manufacturers of Cascarets, No-To-Bac, Dr. Hobbs’ Sparagus Pills and Gum-To-Bac. The company manufactures Cascarets, No-To-Bac, Dr. Hobbs’ Sparagus Kidney Pills and Gum-To-Bac, a new preparation which was put on the market for the first time this season. The business of the company is enormous. It buys during the year $30,000 worth of postage stamps and, as previously stated , has thus made Attica a second-class postoffice, the smallest town in the United States in which the government has established the free delivery system. Just at present the company is devoting its chief energy toward pushing the sale of Cascarets. To this end fifteen million Cascaret tablets were given away as samples in one year. In his management of the business affairs of the company, Mr. Kramer is assisted by Major A.B. Schanz, secretary of the company, who, like his principal, is a man of force and ideas. In an advisory capacity his services are particularly valuable to Mahor Kramer, who consults with him on all important matters, and it has been remarked that “afterKramer and Schanz have considered and discussed the proposition it is no longer a theory, but a clean-cut condition under control”. Major Schanz was the organizer and first captain of the Attica Battery (Battery C, I.N.G.), of which Attica is justly proud, and the existence of which is indirectly the result of the location of the Sterling Remedy Co., here. Mr. Sherman D. Clegg has charge of the correspondence with druggists and jobbers. Under him are twenty stenographers and typewriters, who handle the office work and there is kept a record of every retail druggist in the United States, a splendid card system showing in detail the business relations, of the firm with more than 40,000 retailers of drugs in practically every community in the country. Mr. G.F. Martin, cashier and financial man, has no sinecure, as one can readily realize when taking into consideration the fact that he issues an average of 4,000 checks monthly. This does not include salaries, all employees being paid weekly in cash. Mr. Jas.C. Sa’lee is manger of the Foreign Department as well as traveling men and advertisers. He has twenty or more men under his supervision scattered all over this country and abroad, who call upon the retail druggists, solicit orders, attend to bill posting, street-car advertising, house-to-house distributing and window and counter displays. Each of these travelers is a specialist in his way, and has some particular qualification to attract the attention of the public to the merits of Cascarets and the other specialties handled. The newspaper contracting and auditing department is under the supervision of Mr. W.P. Rhodes, ably assisted by a large corps of clerks. The detail and correspondence in this department is something enormous; a faint idea of it may be gained from the statement that the Sterling Remedy Co.’s advertising was active in 75 percent of all the publications in the United States. Mr. Wilbert M. Allen has general supervision of the mailing, packing, shipping and printing departments, the stores and building. Although young in years for the responsible position he occupies, there are few who could compare with him in capacity for the work and judgment required to execute the multitude of his duties. Mr. Edw. L. Bougham is Major Kramer’s personal assistant and representative. Visitors are always welcome at the Sterling Remedy Co. establishment, and it is an interesting experience to look over the plant. The building occupied is a large three story brick, tastefully painted white, with dark green trimmings. The upper story is occupied by the packing and punishing department. This work is all done by girls, and it is indeed a pleasant sight to see their nimble fingers rapidly placing the peculiarly shaped Cascaret tablets in the neat lithographes boxes, or sewing the coxed to the triangular standers on which they are displayed in the windows and on the counters of retail druggists. The second story is entirely occupied by the general offices of the company. It consists of one large room occupied by the clerks and stenographers of the various departments arranged systematically. Around one side and the front is a handsome glass partition, forming the private offices of the various department managers, where each may attend to the dictation of correspondence and the other business under his special charge. Each department manager’s desk is equipped with a graphophone, telephone and electric call bell. The first impression created on entering the office is that one is in the general office of some large metropolitan concern. The first floor is divided into several departments, of which the mailing department is the most extensive, employing about seventy-five young ladies constantly addressing and mailing advertising matter and samples all over the civilized world. In the printing office two large power presses are constantly running off circular letters, booklets and other advertising matter at the rate of 30,000 impressions daily. The shipping department in the rear of the building presents a scene of great activity; as the goods are packed on the third floor they are carried down the freight elevator to the shipping room, placed in large cases and carted away to the railroad stations for transportation to the big wholesale stores throughout the country and the agencies of the company abroad. The remedies manufactures and sold by the Sterling Remedy Co. are the results of years of labor and scientific investigation to discover, formulate and produce the most effective curative agents for the ills of humanity. Cascarets Candy Cathartic is the greatest cure for constipation and bowl troubles ever known. Dr. Hobbs Sparague Kidney Pills never fail to cure kidney diseases. No-To-Bac will effectually eradicate the vile tobacco habit. Gum-To-Bac, “the nerve gum”, will regulate the use of tobacco, prevent nicotine poisoning, tone up the nervous system, stimulate the appetite and relieve indigestion. We take pleasure in recommending these “sterling” remedies to our readers, knowing full well they will produce the results desired. “Results,-that’s it.” Attica may well, indeed, congratulate itself on having an institution like the Sterling Remedy Co., with the assurance and conviction that as long as it and Kramer are with us the progress of growth, development and prosperity will not cease.
