William Brier. The subject of this sketch was born April 25th, 1820 in Champaign County, Ohio, and departed this life at his home place at his son's, Mr. Francis E. Brier in Pine Township, Friday morning, June 1, 1900, at 9 o'clock, aged 80 years, 1 month and 6 days. He moved with his parents, Isaac and Mary Brier, from Ohio to Indiana in 1830. He was one of thirteen children of his father's family, and helped his father on the farm for a number of years. He then worked at the trade of a carpenter for several years, and also engaged in the millwright business. In March 1850, he joined the lodge of Odd Fellows at Attica and was one of the charter members of the lodge at Rainsville. In the death of Mr. Brier the last of the charter members of that lodge is gone. A short time after becoming an Odd Fellow, he joined the Masonic Order, both of which orders he was a member in good standing until death. November 17, 1850, he was united in marriage to Miss Amy J., daughter of Carpenter and Amy J. Morey. To this union were born two children, Francis E., who survive him, and Sylvia A., who died June 16, 1884, in the 28th year of her life. The wife also survives. After marriage, Mr. Brier and his wife settled on a farm previously purchased, and in 1858 moved to the old homestead where he lived until May 1, 1892, when he moved to Williamsport and resided until October 1899, when he again moved to the old homestead where he lived with his son and family until his death. The funeral services were held at the family residence Sunday morning at 11 o'clock, under the auspices of the Masonic Order, Rainsville Lodge, No. 315, assisted by the I.O.O.F., Defoe Lodge, NO. 101. Interment was made in the Briscoe Cemetery. Mrs. Ed. Curtley of Rossville, Ill., died last Friday after a long illness and the funeral and interment occurred Monday last at 3 p.m. Deceased has relatives in this county.
